For those that know John Jenkin, or have been involved with him, know his passion for the community and his business.
His active involvement in major projects within local sporting groups and the huge expansion of his business make him a very valuable and respectable member of the Tatiara Community.
In 1982, after working for a local automotive business for eight years, which is where he completed his apprenticeship, John decided to start his own truck repair business with a partner. After the difficult process of obtaining a loan to fund the business they called Tatiara Trucks, it developed very rapidly into a thriving little operation. John worked a 24-hour shift on his own, attending the breakdowns during the night and working a normal day to get jobs done in the workshop.
John soon began the hunt for an alternative site and after several years of searching for a suitable position and close involvement with the local council,John purchased land at the newly developed industrial estate and began building his 200’ X 100’ workshop and office complex which John designed himself. This was completed and operational in February 1997. Over the 13 years of being in these premises John has funded many new pieces of equipment and tooling which make his workshop one of the most advanced and diverse in Australia. John now employs over 35 staff.
Attracting parts and service dealerships for Cat, Cummins, Detroit, Perkins, Volvo, Scania, Adrad and a sub-dealer for Kenworth enables Tatiara Truck and Trailers to carry out a huge variety of work such as general servicing, engines, gearbox and diff rebuilds, overhauling brakes, wheel alignments, radiator repairs, engineering and a 24-hour breakdown service covering a 400klm radius. John is committed to providing his staff with job security and opportunities for advancement by providing training in various departments and development courses. The staff is trained on the job and through the companies dealerships which gives access to specialised training.
Since commencement of business, John has employed 32 apprentices and trainees and is closely involved with the local schools participating in the work experience and VET programs. As a mentor, empowering leader and professional business person in the community, John Jenkin is an excellent candidate for the National Road Transport Hall of Fame.
