Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2010.
Peter Smith left school aged 14 and went to work for Red Top taxis as a grease monkey. He then did an apprenticeship as a spray painter but the outdoors beckoned. At the age of 17 he took up driving a KB5 Inter delivering timber throughout Melbourne for William Cook. A driver’s licence wasn't asked for at interview, so he assumed it was ok to use his brothers.
Peter’s time at Yellow Express Carriers, driving cranes and low loaders, was interrupted by 2 years "Nashos" in the Army Engineers, operating all types of earthmoving equipment. He then joined Lance Smith Heavy Haulage delivering pressure vessels, cranes, dozers, scrapers, transformers etc, to mining and construction sites throughout Australia in Fodens, Macks and a Scammell in the days when the "south road" was at its toughest.
He then decided to have a go on his own, starting with a small Hino tray truck, and gradually moving up to a LTL Ford, Scania, Volvo and he is currently running Melbourne - Sydney in his own Freightliner and tautliner trailer.
