Stan has had a long, interesting, challenging and rewarding career in the transport industry and the following are some highlights. Between 1955 and 1958 he bought an old Commer (1950 petrol) and ran Melbourne to Adelaide carting nuts and bolts.
Being a private owner he often had to approach Brambles, Mayne Nickless or one of the other bigger companies looking for a backload. He recalls this could take anything up to three days. In 1959 Stan saved up enough money to purchase a new International and continued to run Melbourne to Adelaide.
A second International and a Dodge were purchased and these ran the same route. He did this until 1972.
In 1978 Stan decided to reduce his fleet back to two trucks (International), one pulled a tanker for Mayne Nickless from Melbourne to Sydney carrying various types of liquid freight including vinegar, poisons and petroleum products. The trailer was used for running between Melbourne and Sydney with general freight. One interesting trip was to cart an oil rig from Maitland to Wyndham in a convoy of 22 trucks.
Stan later sold the two Internationals and purchased an R200 International. One highlight with this truck was a trip from Melbourne to Port Hedland via Meekatharra, Marble Bar and Mt Newman in Western Australia hauling an air conditioning plant. Stan met a man on the mail run just out of Meekatharra and his timely advice was:Just keep going, if it rains you will be here for six weeks, Stan took his advice and kept going. His return trip was via Carnarvon and Perth to home. In 1978 Stan purchased a White 9000 and ran Melbourne to Adelaide with general freight. He sold the truck in 1984 and retired from interstate work.
