Simon Metcalf was born on the 25th February 1949 in Llandrindod Wells Central Wales, where his parents had a mixed farm, immigrated to Australia at seventeen where he worked on a farm near Barmedman in New South Wales, and then he moved over to Western Australia after nine months.
Simon was first employed in Esperance on a land development project before changing to a local transport company in Mallee Town Transport carting stock locally and to Perth driving a C1800 (Butter Box) International ACCO.
After eighteen months there, a move to Perth and a short stint as an owner driver carting single men's quarter huts up to Paraburdoo in the North West, it was about this time Simon met his wife Rita, who was on a working holiday in Perth. The rough roads in the North had destroyed the Ford D1000, so there was a move to Adelaide, Rita's home town.
Different jobs occurred here with driving an AEC Mandator, sub-contracting for Kennelly's Transport to the North West with rail lines made in Castlemaine, then furniture to Perth for Diggers Removals in a Knocker Commer, a local semi tipper job in an ERF and interstate carting wine in a 1418 Benz. After getting married in 1973 there was a deal to give up the interstate driving but a job came up with P & K Good, doing Adelaide to Melbourne in 1418s again and then a Kenworth with 871 Detroit.
Two stints with P & K Good with an overseas trip of 12 months in between, then another owner driver spell, taking wine to Sydney and steel back from Newcastle. 1980 was the start of 4½ years with Straits Haulage doing East Coast to Perth mostly in a V8 Cat powered Kenworth. This was followed by another 4½ years driving for J Collins towing Kwikasair Trailers to Darwin driving W Models T650 and T600 Kenworths.
After moving to Tasmania for a couple of years, Simon returned to the mainland driving a W Model for a mate towing a TNT fridge van Australia wide, then when the W Model was sold a short spell followed driving a roadtrain with fridges running from Adelaide to Perth in a Transtar. In September 1993 Simon started working for Toll Linehaul where he still works today.
