Following in his father's footsteps, Greg Hemley was 19 years old when he purchased his first truck, a C1800 International with a Perkins motor, quite a big truck in its time. Growing up on a farm in Callawadda, at six years old he was in the driver's seat, perched on his father's knee, steering his tipper.

At 14 years old Greg delivered a load of gravel to local farmers. From that moment, truck driving was certain to be his chosen career. By 17, before he had a licence, Greg was carting grain to the silos as that's the sort of thing you did growing up in the country.

Once Greg had his C1800 International there was no stopping him. He was on the road carting 44 gallon drums of fuel from Melbourne to Stawell. For the next 20 years Greg covered many miles carting timber for modular homes and other general freight interstate from Melbourne to Brisbane, and Brisbane to Adelaide. He also carted locally.

When Greg met Bronwyn, now his wife of 33 years, they began their business, GR & BD Hemley Transport .The business boomed. They had five trucks, three LNT Louisvilles, an Acco and an LTL which Greg still drives today. Their son Chris helps out doing maintenance while Greg Junior has followed in his father's footsteps driving a Louisville carting general freight locally and interstate.

Before they met, Bron had no history with trucks, but without her, Greg says he couldn't have done it. Sometimes Bron would keep Greg company on trips but mostly she was working at home to keep the business afloat.

After 43 years in the industry Greg still does local trips in the LTL and occasionally he and Bron hit the road and spend a few days in Queensland.

He is still at it because he enjoys the people he meets, the places he sees and the things he learns. Greg can't speak highly enough of the blokes he has met on the road and although Bron is not always with him, she is as much a part of the business as he is.
