Andrew McKean

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2023.

Andrew McKean, known as Andy, was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1957. Andrew got his passion for driving trucks from one of his best mates Kenny Pryde and Kenny’s brother-in-laws, who drove for Linfox and Wettenhalls at the time. Andrew started out in the Transport Industry in 1978 when he successfully gained his Class 3 licence, to cart grain for harvest in an International ACCO (butter box). This made for a very hot summer!

Andrew carted spuds in a Commer to Echuca and Berrigan, before becoming a furniture removalist. He delivered furniture both interstate and local for Southern Cross, Greens, John Ryan and Rainbow Removals. Ten years later, in 1989, Andrew progressed to the office as a sales estimator in Townsville. Andrew then went to work for a new company in the Atherton Tablelands where he was moving furniture down and back to Brisbane.

In 1993 Andrew moved back to Melbourne where he worked for APS driving which included all sorts of duties wharf, local and interstate change overs. In 1997 Andrew worked for Konway Express completing interstate deliveries for 6 years before they went into receivership. He lost a great job and was disappointed as he had been enjoying driving the Kenworth 404.

In September 2002 Andrew started to drive for Transtar Express in a Scania.  Just one month into this job he was hijacked and kept hostage for 5 hours before being pushed out of a moving car. This incident took 2 years off his life. With the help of family and friends he slowly got back into trucks.

Andrew worked for Highway Haulage doing scaffold deliveries in an Isuzu until 2006 when he started driving interstate again for a contractor that worked out of Scott’s of Mt Gambier, driving a Sterling and a cabover Kenworth. He drove for them for 6 years despite his anxiety.

From 2012 until 2015 Andrew worked for Sancell driving a B-Double twice a week to Sydney in a Scania 480hp auto, carting bubble wrap.  He then started working local, driving Kenworth tippers for Frankston Sand & Soil. Only 3 months into the job the company bought 2 twin steer Kenworths, one of them had his name on the door, he was chuffed and remained with the company until 2020.

Andrew has now semi-retired to Mathoura NSW, he is working part-time driving the courtesy bus for the RSL, while he awaits a knee operation. Andrew has been in transport for over 40 years and has been to a lot of places all over Australia.
