Roy Avery

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2005.

Roy Avery was born on the 6th of June, 1923 at Hawker, South Australia. As a teenager, he moved with his parents, to Verdun in the Adelaide Hills onto a dairy farm and joined the Australian Army serving in both South Australia and Victoria with the Home Forces.

After the war, he spent a short time at Victor Harbour before starting with the Silver Seal Oil Company at Adelaide and Darwin, recycling WWII oil and petrol drums and WWII truck cabs. He later moved to Townsville to work salvaging ex-WW11 plant and equipment from the remote Cape York Peninsula.

After a stint in Victoria working in the timber industry, Roy returned to Adelaide and worked with the PMG in Currie Street.  In 1955 he worked for JT Symonds carting supplies for the Department of Defence in an NR Mack on the Adelaide to Melbourne run.  Later still he ran the Sydney routes with K series Inters, SV & OHU Fords, petrol Commers and then to Innaminka Betoota in an ex-army Diamond T, Ginpole truck on rig work.  He also had a period with Alan Scott on an AEC oil tanker carting furnace oil from Pt. Stanvac to Osbourne Power Station, which was followed by a spell on an Albion dumpster rubbish truck which was the first of its type in South Australia attracting a fair bit of attention in the waste industry.

Roy then decided to move back to the Northern territory where he worked firstly for the late Len Kittle and then for Co ord Transport.  Roy hauled fuel and dangerous goods tankers  under the Red North banner. He also spent time on the Elliot to Larrimah end of the Co ord shuttle utilizing the old Darwin to Larrimah railway line.  On retiring from Co ord Transport at the age of 65, he did a spell with Trailways Coaches in the depot until its demise.  When Roy finally retired he decided to move to Elliot where he spent considerable time during his transport shuttling days with Co ord Transport. 

Roy passed away peacefully in Adelaide.
