Alf Burrows

Inducted into the Rimula Hall of Fame at ReUnion 2015.

Alfonso (Alf) Burrows was born in 1970 at Mount Gambier, South Australia. His father drove fire trucks and also worked as a bull dozer operator on occasion. This sparked Alf’s interest in truck driving from an early age. He started driving at the age of 12 on the family farm; usually with tractors, utes and motorbikes. He had plenty of practice when he first left school as he worked on four different farms each of which had different cars, trucks, tractors and farm equipment. Alf went on to get his truck licence when he was 18 and his semi trailer licence at 19.

Initially Alf worked for Allan Walker Livestock in Kalangadoo where he carted cattle and sheep before moving to Scott’s Mount Gambier for four years running interstate carting timber, coke, wine, beer and heavy steel loads. At age 25 Alf started working with Gasparini Transport (also in Mount Gambier) transporting produce including onions, potatoes, timber, copper and steel on interstate runs. A year after starting with Gasparini, Alf gained his B-double licence and continued carting interstate loads with Gasparini Transport for eight years.

Alf built a reputation of being a loyal and hard-working driver who was respected in the transport industry. When he was 34 he bought his own truck and trailers and went into partnership with Tony Gasparini. Combining the names of Alfonso and Gasparini, they formed Algas, a small carrying business which continued to thrive over many years. They prided themselves in providing a reliable service to customers. Their efficiency and integrity was also well recognised by many other truckies and businesses in the industry. Together they purchased a new 104 Kenworth, and four years later they bought a Western Star 4800.  In 2015 Alf is still operating his Western Star and also runs a K200 Kenworth interstate.

Alf has the typical ‘Australian Truckie’ attitude. He does what he does because he loves it. He is always lending a hand where needed and never complains or expects anything in return.

Alf Burrows values time off with his family. Reflecting on his achievements in the   industry Alf today enjoys the life it gave him. Now, he enjoys his time as a grandfather and in his spare time takes his Harley for a run.
