Bernard Bamber

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2018.

Bernie was born in Brisbane QLD in 1942, growing up on a farm in Laidley.

Bernie's first trucking job was in 1967 carting wool from Cannington Station McKinlay to Brisbane for Frank Banning the station owner. He went on to haul freight for Richards in Miles, sheep & wool in Tara, and then cattle in Surat for Don McMillan Transport. Then in Alice Springs & Katherine he worked for Fleet Owners, Co-Ord & Buntine driving Road Trains, moving both freight & cattle and then copper from Peko mine in Tennant Creek.

Settling in Darwin from 1974 onward he continued trucking, driving fuel tankers and delivering general freight including Malanda milk for Ascots in the Northern Territory. He then worked at the Mobil depot as a storeman.

Bernie continued trucking, working for Buntine delivering general freight from Darwin into the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Over the years Bernie drove a range of trucks including Scania, Kenworth, White, Mack, Volvo & others. Some of the best known Mack trucks he drove were The Power & the Glory & The High & Mighty. The Mack Bulldog was always a prominent feature on his personal 4WD's and to this day his son has the original hood ornament.

On his long hauls he always had a full tucker box & Slim Dusty playing his favourite songs including Lights on the Hill. Bernie was an old school trucker working long hours; he took great pride in his work and always got the job done.

In his later years and to his final day he was a caretaker at the Nighthawk transport yard at East Arm in Darwin. Living on site he always enjoyed a good yarn with fellow truckies.
