Leonard Brereton

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2021.

Leonard Garry Brereton,  better known as “Greasy” or Lenny, was born in October, 1952,  one of three brothers.  The brothers all grew up to be involved in interstate transport and they all lived in Maryborough, Victoria. 

Lenny  started working in transport in the seventies, driving a 1418 Mercedes Benz for Stawell Haulage,  carting wine and laminex to Sydney and Brisbane.  Lenny then drove for several owners such as  C.V.T Maryborough, J.J. Leech & Sons and Dave Parsons Castlemaine. He was driving for Mick McKenna in April 1979 when more than 3,000 truck drivers blocked major highways at nearly 40 locations over four states. Industry talks with governments over  road taxes, freight rates and fuel costs had stalled so blockades were set up to throttle interstate freight runs. Only cars, medical supplies, livestock and compassionate cases were allowed through. Lenny was part of the biggest New South Wales blockade of 600 trucks at Goulburn-Yass on the Hume Highway.

Lenny spent the next eight to ten years working for Keith Reid at Mt Rowan, Victoria,  carting general freight and potatoes to Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. He then became an owner-driver, buying a cabover Kenworth and trailer from Fred’s Transport in Shepparton, Victoria. 

In 2005 Lenny went to Melbourne to cart containers to and from the wharf for Rocke Bros and Patricks. His last full job was at Western Trucks Towing & Repairs when he took up a Public Relations role in 2011.  Lenny retired in  2018 and has an interest in harness racing.
