Barry Bywaters

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2014.

Barry Desmond Bywaters (Barney) was born in Goomalling WA in 1942 and grew up in the Jennacubine area around agriculture and trucks. It was inevitable Barry was going to be involved in the transport industry. He had started contracting with his brothers when he was just 14, carting grain, fertilizer in 1956. He married Janice in 1964 and they went on to have six children.

Barry ultimately went into partnership with his older brother firstly clearing there own farm in Kalannie WA but also doing contract fertilizer haulage with an innovative belt they made themselves. Their diverse business included fertilizer spreading for farmers and running the Goomalling CSBP depot. At harvest time grain carting became a large part of the business. They also carting cat- tle on the weekends, often sub-contracting to Clarke Transport. At the time they were operating a 1975 White Road Commander along with several Kenworths through out the North West with two decker cattle crates on triple roadtrains.

In 1991 Barry started his own contracting business, Mortlock Haulage, with a 1984 International 2670. He started with Weston Milling Northam then gained the CBH contract intra silo carting; a contract he still holds today. Barry also did sandblasting jobs from his depot. Barry has a fleet of five Westernstar Constellations, an F12 Volvo, White Road Commander and Iveco powerstar. The diversity in fleet reflects the diversity of the business.

Today Mortlock Haulage business consists of grain, fertilizer, lime, blue metal and general freight cartage. Barry still runs the fleet enjoying working alongside his son, two daughters, son-in-law and a couple of other drivers. He is still driving the roadtrains when he the opportunity arises. Barry is old school and has always cleaned, repaired and maintained his own prime movers and equipment. At 72 years of age and still running the fleet and managing the business he can't imagine doing anything else. Road transport has literally been his life's work and he has earned his place here on the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame.
