Hilary Barker
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2006.
Hilary was born in Narooma, NSW where he lived and attended school until he was eight years old. Then the family moved to Nowra, NSW where he finished his schooling. At the age of 15 he started work for Hays and Kydd Transport. He met and married Elaine in 1954 and started a family.
In 1957 he bought his own truck and carted timber from the south coast of NSW to the Port Kembla steels works. It was hard going to say the least. Hilary worked for himself for a few years before selling his business and moving to Sydney, NSW with his family.
In the next few years he worked for a variety of companies including Binns Transport, Cousins Transport, Rahaley Transport and a couple of other companies primarily doing interstate runs but occasionally taking on a bit of localised cartage. In 1966 he started working for Blue Metal Industries driving tippers and tankers until Boral took them over.
At that time he decided to purchase his own truck and became a subcontract hauler for them; one of the first to do so.In 1993 Boral gave him the carbon black cartage driving to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. He did this until he retired in March 2006. Today Hilary keeps himself busy by enjoying taking holidays and visiting family and friends.
