Barry Clough

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2003.

Barry Clough was raised in Alice Springs and moved to Katherine in 1949, at the age of eight, to the family peanut farm.  He completed his primary schooling there and returned to Alice Springs to take up his first job which was with the Hayes family on Undoolya Station.

Barry started his truck driving career in 1960 carting cattle with Peter Lynch.  After a couple years, Peter moved to Katherine while Barry remained in Alice Springs as a general contractor.Barry worked doing fencing, wind-mill erection, tanks and just about anything else that was required on cattle stations.  Barry had a Caterpillar D6 dozer which he privately contracted to the oil rig companies 24 hrs a day, 7 days per week.  This was the beginning of a business which increased to a fleet of machines enabling him to complete all contracts necessary for the oil rigs.

When the oil rigs moved on Barry stayed and continued earth moving throughout the Northern Territory till 1971.  By then, he was ready to have a change of scenery and sold off all his plant and equipment and moved his family to southeast Queensland. The majority of his working life in Queensland was spent back in the pastoral industry where he was involved,  or worked, with Tankreds, CSR and the North Australian Pastoral Company (NAPCO).  Barry retired in 1996 and lives in Gatton QLD but has been far from idle in his retirement.  He has worked tirelessly restoring old trucks, in particular the B Model Mack, of which he is indisputably the master restorer in Australia.

Barry is an active member of several heritage truck clubs and his voluntary work for them has been outstanding to say the least.  Barry has meticulously restored 'Ruby' the B Model Mack and a 1418 Mercedes Benz for the National Road Transport Hall of Fame.  Barry Clough's meticulous recreation of a Noel Buntine B-model Mack is renown throughout the country as one of the best ever done. There are few people in Australia as dedicated to the preservation and restoration of our industry's old workhorses, and our road transport, as Barry.
