Edgar “Eddie” Dennis

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2004.

Eddy was born on November 1st 1934. He is married to Elaine and has four children. He started driving at the age of 18 after doing his training as a pastry cook. He gained his experience at Woomera, driving a Thornycroft water truck for two years. After this he started driving interstate.
He purchased his first truck, a Commer Knocker, in the early 60s and in 1967 it became an FB Volvo. He used to say he was king of the road until the new model came out.

In the late 70s Eddy started up another transport business and was soon doing five trips a week from Port Lincoln to Adelaide. Lincoln City Freight, as it was known, was eventually sold off to Fleet Express and Eddy stayed on as manager.But, as is often the case, the call of the road soon got to him again and he was keen to re-enter the industry. In the mid 1980s he purchased a S2600 S-line from Barry James and started transporting Coles freight into Port Lincoln from Adelaide and Melbourne. Eddy eventually became the prime-contractor with the business called Dennis Transport. By 1994 his fleet had grown to five prime-movers.Eddy saw the fledgling tuna industry as his and his town's future and expanded to cater for the tuna industry.

Dennis Transport today is a modern company specialising in container cartage, seafood refrigeration, general freight and grain carting. The new premises built on 18 acres, are situated in the heart of the fishing induatry of Port Lincoln. The company has an Adelaide depot with 25 employees and also employs around 30 local people in Port Lincoln. It has 120 reefer powered sites, is customs licensed and is AQIS approved. This company won the Business Excellence Award in 2001.Eddy retired early 2004 and has handed the reins to his son Steve but the business is still a family affair with Steve's wife and sister working in the office and with Steve doing the driving.

In the road transport industry on the Eyre Peninsular Eddy has bulldozed himself a real pathway of success. He is known to everyone and is a true gentleman of the road and pioneer in his own right.
