Merv Edwards
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2011.
Mervyn Edwards has been employed and associated with Lindsay Brothers Transport now for thirty years and in that time he managed to clock up an incredible 9 million plus kilometres, accident free. He has been the most fuel efficient driver for the past five years, returning figures such as 2.3 km per litre towing refrigerated trailers interstate; a feat in itself considering the stringent emissions placed on our engines today.
Whilst the talk amongst senior drivers in the industry is retiring from today's hustle and bustle on our roads, Merv still feels strongly about the industry and is prepared to encourage the newcomers to discover the rewards that can be achieved if successful. Whilst Merv knows rewards are only part of today's package for survival, he voices his opinions on talk-back radio, Overnight Express and sits on the LBT OH&S Committee to ensure their safety is also in order.Merv has been chosen to tow the 'Anniversary' refrigerated trailers we have, the first was our '40th Anniversary' trailer which was kept immaculate for the five years Merv towed it.
Today Merv operates a new 500Hp Volvo towing one of the '50th Anniversary' trailers which he presents in an immaculate condition travelling the east coast between Sydney and Townsville. Last year, at the Grafton truck show, which is an annual event to aid the much needed fundraising for Westpac Helicopter Rescue and Camp Quality, Merv added three more trophies to his collection of sixteen trophies for events ranging from 'Best Prime Mover' to 'Best Trailer' to 'Best Combination'. Having a winning combination is a reflection of a driver's pride in his work and donating your time to a worthy cause is a reflection of human compassion for the less fortunate. With 12 million plus kilometres and 33 years of service out of 39 years under his belt, an occasional logbook fine has occurred, but Merv has managed to keep a full set of demerit points on his licence since 1992. With the increasing presence of speed cameras, law enforcement, bad publicity regarding heavy vehicles and increasing traffic flows with less experienced drivers on our road infrastructure, maintaining a clean licence whilst conducting a professional attitude is a feat for any transport driver in our modern day society. Merv has made a great contribution to servicing a number of Lindsay Brothers Transport major clientele with his dedication, expertise and professional attitude in refrigeration transportation and will remain in our eyes as a mentor to new arrivals seeking a career in transport.
