Geoff Gunter

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2010.

In 1954 Geff Gunter's brother-in-law, Ken, decided to sell his R7 petrol Commer to buy a new C7 Commer with a lazy axle. So, at just 19 years of age, Geoff sold everything to raise the money and begin a career in the transport industry by purchasing the R7. Along with Ken and his brother Alan, they sub-contracted to J&T Woolley and Sons of Newcastle and hauled general freight between capital cities.

With their three Commers, they then became the first subcontractors to Brambles after Woolley's sold out to them in the late 1950s. Geoff stopped on the long distance interstate work to marry his childhood sweetheart, Judy, and start a local delivery service named ACME Carrying Company which he operated for twenty five years running Dodges, Fargos and an Austin. In the early 70s Geoff decided to sell his company after being approached to drive and maintain a fully imported Bedford Outside Broadcast unit for Network Ten in Sydney, one of six in the country. He followed sporting and special events always maintaining the truck's mechanical condition and its immaculate appearance.

This continued until the early 90s when Network Ten decided to close down their Outside Broadcast division. He proudly never put a mark on the truck and was always mindful of the coaches aluminium bodywork. In its final years the replacement value of the Bedford was nearly $4 million. Geoff was in charge of the Network Ten fleet when he retired. Married to Judy, with four children and ten grandchildren Geoff has spent his more recent years reliving his earlier days by restoring a 1957 Knocker.
