Douglas Freck Gordon

Douglas Lambert Gordon (Freckles) was born at Narrabri Hospital in 1931. He went to school in Narrabri and later finished his schooling in Bellata. At fifteen Douglas started working for his father Lambert Gordon carting logs from the Pilliga Forest into sawmills in Narrabri. He also carted wool from Northwest New South Wales to Newcastle and Sydney and backloaded with lighting kerosene with drop offs all over the Northwest of New South Wales.

At eighteen years of age he had his own truck, an International 190 and later he got a Leyland Hippo and carted timber from around Injune in central Queensland to Sydney. When times were quiet he was working back for his father Lambert Gordon carting cattle from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the markets down south.

Freck married June Sternbeck and had four children Robert, Colin, Jannette and Denise.

He later carted scrap metal into the Gunpowder Mine northwest of Mt Isa for several years. Freckles had several trucks in his later years including a 92 International, known as the king of the road and an AEC Mandator. He once spent eight weeks bogged across the Dicks Creek road north of Kynuna. Freck finished his trucking days carting cotton modules to the cotton gins all over Northwest New South Wales.

Sadly Freck passed away 21/6/2009.

He was one of the true characters of the Australian highways.
