Elsie “Mary” Gordon

Elsie Mary Gordon was born in Narrabri on the 27thSeptember 1933 to Andrew and Elsie Bruce. She was one of a family of ten, this large family included three sets of twins.

Her mother passed away when she was only three years old, and she and sister Gladdy went to live in Sydney with her Aunty Ann but she returned to her family when she was five. Andy, her father was left to raise nine children, so when Mary was still quite young she left school to help her father. She also worked when needed at Nurse Lord's Maternity Hospital helping with the babies and new mothers.

She had known Lex Gordon for many years but it wasn't until they met at a dance at the Town Hall that they became an item. They were married in Narrabri on the 19th May 1951. She was a loving and devoted wife and a dedicated mother to Susan, George, twins Sandra and Margaret, David, Linda, Lindsay, Ross, Michael, Steven, twins Paul and Andrew and baby of the family Kate, thirteen in all. She also was a much loved Mama to 34 grandchildren and 36 great grand children.

Over the years while Lex was away driving, Mary did all the book work and coordination of the trucking business with the help of oldest daughter Susan. She continued to do this for many years until the business grew to big for a couple to handle it. She kept her hand in though by doing the 5pm to 10am shift answering the phone. She was very proud of the business Lex and her had started and which has today grown to become Gordon Roadways with a fleet of 50 road trains. Mary often commented that GRW stood for Going the Right Way

Mary was always the life of the party. She had a quick wit and an infectious laugh. If you went to her feeling a bit down, you always left with a smile on your face. That is how most people will remember Mary Gordon. They will remember her ability to see the good side of every situation, her zest for life and her untiring and unconditional love for her husband and family.
