Ken Higgs

Ken Higgs was born on the 13th April 1948 in Barmera, South Australia. His partner is Cathy. Ken started driving at the age of 16 in a K5 Inter at Monash, South Australia in the family's Earthmoving business.

From 1964 to 1970 Ken drove a K5, then progressed to AB160 Tippers, petrol Commers, and a LHD NR Mack low loader. Ken was pretty handy on loaders, graders and even a dozer.

1970 saw the start of his interstate driving career. Ken started in a Commer Knocker and progressed to the powerful 760 Dodge V8 with a bogie trailer. In 1972 Caringbah Haulage used the HR Higgs & Co yard, so Ken had Road Commanders and a Road Boss to drive. At this time Ken meet his current employer and lifelong friend Greg Milthorpe.

In 1976 Ken started his own interstate business with a G88 Volvo, then two COE Kenworths, a White 4000 and a S2 KW. These new prime movers towed Freighter trailers on the Adelaide to Sydney run.

1982 was a sad year in Ken's life as he lost his business and yet this did not deter him. He then started driving for Barry Hart at Merbein. In 1986 Ken was able to own a rig of his own again. The SAR Kenworth was eventually followed by a R600 Mack and then a V8 Valueliner up to 1996. Ken maintained his rig in a pristine state and it was often spotted with the tarp job that had all the knots in a straight line. The loss of a vital contract meant, Ken was forced to sell his truck.

From 1996 to 2002, Ken drove for EC Phillips, in a Cabover KW from Shepparton, up and down the East Coast. Ian Phillips tolerated Ken's fussiness with his tarping. From 2009 to present day Ken finally settled down at Milthorpe Transport. Greg Milthorpe and his son Ray, gave Ken the family environment he enjoys. Ken now drives a 904 Kenworth roadtrain. Ken's still out there helping anyone broken down, needs a tow or chat. Ken is truly an old school Truckie!!
