Kevin Howlett

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2005.

In the late 1960s Kevin Howlett headed to Darwin for a holiday, liked it and soon got a job working for Richard Mitchell in Darwin as a yardie. But, as is inevitable, the call of the road came and soon he was driving to and from Munmarlary, Mudginberry and Point Stuart collecting frozen buffalo meat to bring back to the Darwin cold stores. During this time he also did relief driving hauling to Mt Bundy mine for Trevor Wilson and Neville Kaye, who were subcontractors for Wridgways. 

In the early 1970s Kevin went to Queensland and worked for Harris Haulage driving road trains to Darwin. After two years, he returned to live in Darwin and in 1974 bought Kelly Stacey's truck, an Acco, with a 555 Cummins motor. After Cyclone Tracey devastated Darwin on Christmas Day, 1974, Kevin relocated to Alice Springs where he and Trevor Wilson did the mail run between Darwin and The Alice  in  two 1418  Mercedes-Benz,  single-axle vans  twice a week. This was the start of K & T Transport. In 1977 K & T Transport relocated back to Darwin and the business developed over the years, transporting containers and vans for Grace Removals, Crowhurst, McBrides and various other companies.

 In 1986, Kevin bought out Trevor's share of the business and a few years later started operating from Brisbane for Grace Removals, as well as carrying his own freight back to Darwin. At this stage, Kevin was operating 13 roadtrains, servicing remote locations, and Brisbane and Alice Springs.  In 1990, Kevin started to make runs to Borroloola and with fuel, mining and refrigeration equipment to the Macarthur River Mine.Kevin was active on the committee of the NT Road Transport Association and was its president at one point.  Kevin also worked tirelessly for Variety driving his truck all over the country. He passed away in 2006.
