Paul Harrison

Paul Harrison, Harro to his mates, started his business, Paul Harrison Transport (PHT) with his wife Margaret in1971. They had purchased a 1964 Bedford TK for use in their fencing contract work. In the years since PHT has gone on to become a well established presence with an impeccable reputation for service and reliability in the Newcastle region of New South Wales.
When the fencing business slowed Paul and Margaret turned their attention to more general freight and eventually restructured their business to make general haulage their core business, operating out of the former fire station in Cardiff, about 13 kilometres from Newcastle. Paul soon found there was plentiful work and expanded his business to include an extendable trailer to cope with new demands. It did not however come without logistical problems. Every time Paul reversed the trailer into the yard the afternoon traffic would be held up. Inevitably he moved to larger premises. In the early 1990s Paul found he needed to move again as his business had outgrown the new depot. Paul Harrison Transport today operates out of a state of the art depot on Nelson Road in Cardiff. Paul Harrison is a devotee of the Mack marque. During his many years in business he has owned many different types and models of Mack trucks from R models to Valueliners. His undisputed favourite is the B-model of which he has three still working in his business. All together Paul has over 70 pieces of registered equipment. His trucks can be counter-weighted to push or pull anything in all manner of over-dimensional work such as moving the Minehunter (a naval mine sweeping vessel) and building materials and equipment for the expansion to the Newcastle Coal Loader. For the last over two decades, PHT has built a solid and reliable reputation for professionalism and a 'will do' attitude in the relocation of over dimensional long, wide, high and heavy loads for both industry and individuals. Paul believes it essential to provide his clients with a service based on commitment, honesty, reliability and experience together with an underlying determination to succeed.Paul is dedicated to the transport industry and is a keen supporter and organiser of Transport Awareness Day in his area which he conducts to highlight to the public the significant role of trucks and drivers to both the local community and the national community. Paul donates all proceeds from the event to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service.A member of the Hunter Valley Classic Commercial Vehicle Club, Paul is keen to preserve the transport history of Newcastle. To this end he has purchased new premises which are solely devoted to restoration work. It is only to be expected that he would also be keen to preserve our road transport heritage. He has completed the restoration of an AEC Mandator and will soon finish the restoration of a B-Model Mack and an AEC Mammoth Major. There are more restorations in the pipeline. These include an R Model Mack, AECs and a Bedford M-model. As Harro says, If they aren't restored now, they will be lost forever.
