Brian Hayes

Being a third generation junior Brian (Hayzy) Hayes was born in Perth in 1957. He knew he was destined to drive trucks while growing up in the trucking industry. Hayzy commenced working alongside his father from around the young age of 16 where he continued to sub-contract for Friendly Transport. He carried out runs from Adelaide to Sydney then Perth and the North West run carting salt, tyres, conveyor belts and timber on the return to home base Adelaide. Hayzy got the taste of the Northern Territory and was bitten by the Territory bug while carrying out a couple of runs to Darwin and Alice Springs in 1975.

In 1976 at the early age of 19 Hayzy purchased his first truck, a G89 Volvo from Friendly's and was carrying out the same run as his father. Then he got the Territory bug again working with his good mate Eddy Holland running to Darwin for Freight Brokers. In 1980 Hayzy scored his own work carting stockfeed to Darwin for NT Stock Feeds and scarp back for Non Ferrals. After having a couple of Macks, in 1985 Hayzy purchased a new C500 Kenworth, the best truck he ever owned. In 1990 Hayzy took over his father-in-laws run, regearing the C500, doing Melbourne to Perth and return express for Railors for three years.

In 1996 and with more than three million kilometres on the clock Hayzy made the decision to call it a day as an owner driver, sold his pride and joy and became a paid employee working for a few different outfits. Hayzy eventually settled in with McMahon Services from Adelaide, doing heavy haulage and tipper work both locally and interstate. After a couple of years he was offered a job with Rhodes Contracting undertaking platform work out of Adelaide to mine sites all over Australia. However being on the road living in parking bays and out of a tucker box for nearly 300 days of the year meant he was hardly ever home to be with the love of his life, his wife Tania, she decided to take a career change and join Hayzy as his pilot.

Eventually Hayzy decided to go back to McMahons, with depots and contracts in Darwin, Karratha, Perth, Sydney and throughout the rest of Australia. Hayzy still gets his dose of the Territory and balances work and life at home with his dear wife Tania and family. Now with over 40 years of operating and driving trucks under his belt he thrives on the balance and continues to love the industry and intends on keeping it all.
