Leslie Harris

LESLIE JAMES HARRIS, known to his family and friends as Harro or Les, was born on the 24thof December, 1948 in Alexandra, Victoria. Straight out of school he started working with his father Bill and brother John as a shearer but soon came to the realisation that shearing wasn't for him. Les then joined the Transport industry at the age of 18 and that's where he spent the next 45 years of his life.

Les began working for Frappell's Transport in 1966 then went on to own his own truck for a number of years where he subcontracted to Phillips Transport. Once he sold his truck he then became an employee there where he drove interstate from Shepparton to Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. He enjoyed being a part of the Phillips family company. He drove the famous No 5. truck for many years. He called it 'PJ's Pride' named after his son Paul. From there he went on to drive for Lewingtons in Wodonga for a short time however as he got older he realised it was time to slow down so he started driving from Shepparton to Melbourne for Hunters Transport and then the local runs around Shepparton for Hicks Transport.

Les' strong work ethic and passion for driving gave him the opportunity to do what he loved doing for so many years. To this day he is still recognised as a legend of the transport industry in the Goulburn Valley area. In 1979, Les married Flo and together they had three children Natalie, Paul and Alanna.

All three kids spent many school holidays going away in the truck with their Dad. They all have fond memories of driving up and down the highways with him and seeing their Dad do what he did best. They all admire him and are proud of the reputation he achieved amongst other transport drivers and throughout the transport industry.

Now semi-retired, Les missed the road but is enjoying his time with his family and more importantly being a Poppy to his grandchildren Jake, Ruby, Oliver and Zoe. He loves catch up with mates from the road, sit back, enjoy a beer and reminisce their on the road.
