George Johnston

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2005.
Born in Brisbane in 1945 and raised at Everton Park, George started his career as a mechanic at Stan's Garage in Fortitude Valley in 1960. After four and a half years, George ventured into truck repairs and commenced work at Western Transport. It was while working at Westerns that George began his association with Mack trucks.
In 1967 George started work at JN Nicholson Transport, another large Mack fleet operator, where he performed workshop and mobile truck repairs. After two years George went on to work for Australian Truck Sales who were dealers for ERF and Mack Trucks. George was now breakdown mechanic and travelled through the Northern Territory and outback Queensland on mobile repairs. In 1971 George went to work for MAN Trucks on their introduction to Australia. Once again he found himself travelling throughout western Queensland and the Northern Territory with the German technicians. George then spent two years with Brown and Hurley who were Kenworth dealers at Rocklea. In 1975 he started as workshop foreman with TNT Heavy Haulage. In 1977 George started JJ Mechanical and worked as a contract mechanic for Don Forsyth at FH Transport at Rocklea for approximately four years and in 1985 he built the workshop in Dulwich Street, Loganholme.  George is called 'Slack' by his friends. He is definitely not slack by nature and the effort he puts in to get a customer's rig back on the road is a testament to that.  To keep his business moving and to help many operators he gave credit when many other larger workshops would not.
