Peter Lloyd

Peter Lloyd was born in Mildura in 1946 and has lived in the Mildura district all his life. He obtained a semi licence soon after he finished school in 1964, and so began a 52 year journey on the highway of life, and it is still going today.

Peter worked around various local depots for a couple of years to gain enough experience to do the long trips he wanted to do. In 1966 he started doing trips from Mildura to Adelaide carting wool and sheep skins one way and steel and general freight back home. He stayed at that job for the next three years.

Peter married his special lady, Kayleen in 1967. Over the next 10 years they had three children, two boys and a girl.

Circa 1969, Peter changed jobs and started carting wine in a tanker from Berri, South Australia to Corowa in New South Wales onto Sydney return to Berri. This job lasted about two years. He then started carting fresh produce to the Sydney and Melbourne markets.

In 1972 the opportunity arose to purchase an ex company truck and this was the start of his career as an owner driver. Over the next 40 plus years Peter had three second hand and seven new trucks. Over his 52 years in the industry, Peter travelled around 11 million kilometres.

Peter had to turn his hand to many differ jobs during his years as an owner driver, including stock, tanker work and in later years bulk grain and almonds in a semi tipper.

Overall Peter feels he had a great life in the transport industry, but feels that the amount of regulations in place today stop old blokes like him from doing the job. He is semi retired now but still drives part time for a local company in Mildura.
