Stephen Malady

Steve (Wizard) Malady was born in Sale, Victoria in March 1964. Like a lot of other people, he has been involved in trucks since he was big enough to reach the peddles. As a young child, he would spend countless hours out at his father's quarry riding in and eventually driving around in a loader or truck. The truck was always the winner.

The day Steve turned 18 he got his car and his truck licence which entailed a drive around the block with the local law enforcement. Coming from a small community this was not unusual.

In 1981 Steve's father thought it was best that he had some sort of trade so he took on a diesel apprenticeship at Murray Goulburn Milk Factory at Maffra, completing it in 1985. After being a mechanic for a while, Steve was itching to get behind the wheel so he started driving a milk tanker delivering packaged milk for MG until 1989.

An opportunity then arose for Steve to drive for GL & VN Leeson Logging & Heavy Haulage Rosedale where he drove semi-trailer and B-double combination log trucks for a few years. From 2000 to 2003 Steve drove for O'Connor's at Morwell involving tipper work and then for AG-Spread Maffra, also doing tipper work.

In 2003 Steve and his wife Caroline purchased their own truck and began their business, SCM Haulage Pty Ltd. They started sub-contracting for McColl's, then bought their own trailer and successfully carted general freight interstate for six years.

In 2009 Steve sold the truck which was a very sad day and went to Western Australia to drive road trains for BGC in Perth. He worked his way up and became a Haulage Supervisor, but it just wasn't the same. Steve then bought an old 1985 W924 Kenworth in Perth and drove it back to Maffra, stripped it down and rebuilt it back to its former glory, including a colour change. It is now his pride and joy in his shed, he may need it one day.

Steve is now working for a local transport operator, doing anything from driving to general maintenance and enjoying every minute of it.
