Jim (Toby) Maguire

Born in 1946 in Deepwater NSW, Toby Maguire started driving trucks at the age of 16 carting grain in a 1953 Austin Loadstar. At 18, Toby purchased his first truck an Austin 545F for £1868. In 1966 he traded the Austin for a Dodge AT4 675N, powered by a 318 V8 and commenced driving interstate.

In 1969 he drove for EJ Burton Transport, wheeling ERF's with 250Hp/335Hp naturally aspirated Cummins, running road trains to Mt Isa then for Bruce Panucci Transport travelling all over Australia driving DCO/DCOE Internationals, R190's and Macks.

He met his wife Pauline in 1970, moved to Mackay and drove for Turners and East Coast transport before moving to Glen Innes in 1974 to start their family. Later that year he joined IPEC, moved to Brisbane and launched the Brisbane to Glen Innes overnight run for which the Yellow Cabs would become synonymous. He was instrumental in the TWU movement and fought long and hard for many years to secure the rights of his fellow drivers.

Toby was involved in the IPEC test program and was granted the first commercial B-double license in QLD with the brands, models, engine combinations and configurations of the trucks he's driven a roll call of Transport history. Toby heralded in the first of the 500 HP machines and lived the trials and tribulations of the new generation electronically controlled engines that today are standard equipment throughout the Industry.

In 1997, after 23 years with IPEC, Toby resigned to explore alternate careers before being drawn back into trucks, purchasing an International S-Line tipper. Powered by a 6v92 Detroit with 13sp RR, Toby helped build the ever increasing expansion of Brisbane up until his retirement in 2006. After 44 years behind the wheel and with over 7 million kms to his name, Toby and Pauline travelled 45,000kms more in their Iveco powered 5thwheeler caravan on their long awaited trip around Australia.

Toby and Pauline settled in Wallangarra QLD, are still married with 7 grown children and 10 grandchildren. When he isn't tending to his enormous garden, Toby tinkers with his classic trucks, vintage tractors, antique machinery and a colossal model car collection that is the envy of all the grandchildren. Both are active in their local community with Toby employing his driving experience transporting senior citizens to and from appointments and regularly participating in the driver reviver program where he recounts the glory days of old and passes along his vast industry experience to the up and coming drivers of today.
