Jack McCarthy

From early childhood, Jack McCarthy was a boy fascinated with wheels and it was inevitable that he would seek a career in trucks.  Initally however, the young Jack McCarthy worked as a farm hand and shearer around Ross Bridge, VIC before being employed to drive a fuel delivery truck in Victoria.
He moved to Bordertown in 1965 driving 180 and 190 Internationals pulling stock crates.  After some time, he drove a B61 Mack carting steel between Newcastle and Adelaide.He pulled refrigerated vans, with one memorable trip to the Territory in 1973 stranding him for many days at the Finke and Palmer Rivers with floodwaters washing away bridges and roads.  He purchased his first Kenworth in 1974 then gradually built up his fleet with Kenworths and Western Stars, taking pride in their presentation.  A new depot was built in Bordertown in 2001.Jack's love of humanity and compassion for trucking mates was well-known.  He had wonderful empathy with newcomers to the industry helping many get a start in an often difficult and tough business.  Jack passed away in 2004 after a long battle with cancer.  At his service, many stories were related. It was said:-"A great life is measured not by the number of years lived but by the living that is packed into that lifetime.  Greatness is measured by the levels of achievements, by the friends made, by the acts of kindness, by the number of lives enriched and touched by that person.  It is measured by a true heart and a generous spirit.  By all those measures Jack McCarthy was a great man".
