Bruce Murray

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2010.

Andrew Murray has always been known as Bruce. He was born in Warragul in Gippsland in July 1945 and first started driving trucks part-time to earn some extra cash when he was doing his welding apprenticeship a trade that has served him well since.

Bruce's first driving experience was picking up milk cans from farms in the Jindivick and Neerim area. He later went to work full-time for Petersville in Warragul, south of Melbourne.

Bruce then carted timber to Cann River and Bairnsdale with hand-loaded bags of cement from Traralgon to Melbourne. He also carted timber from the Drouin West Sawmill to Melbourne. When he turned 21, Bruce decided it was time for him to go into business for himself so he bought a truck and started carting cattle to markets and doing general haulage. He also won a contract to cart and erect power poles for the then State Electricity Commission. His business, called AB & L Murray Pty Ltd carried bricks from Melbourne and soon became the biggest distribution agent for 19 brick and masonry manufacturers. Starting with two trucks, Bruce and Lorraine soon grew the business big enough to run six trucks and employ sub-contractors.

When Bruce's son Darren joined the business in 1990, the name was changed to ABG, L&D Murray Pty Ltd. Bruce retired in 2004 but continues to drive occasionally helping out in the business when he can. He also enjoys taking equipment to tractor pulls. The business started by Bruce is today in the hands of his son Darren.
