Reginald Philips

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2006.

Reginald (Reg) Phillips started driving in Sydney delivering new furniture from various furniture stores such as WW Campbell and Symonds Furniture in the 1930s.

Being in transport he was in a protected industry when WW2 started and at the end of the war he bought some ex-army trucks still painted in their camouflage brown and green.  With these trucks he branched out into the delivery of furniture to country NSW.

At the end of the 1940s and the start of the 1950s he started to increase his fleet of trucks operating under the name of Balmain Taxi & Transport Service and extending his operations interstate.  Sometimes he took his children on interstate trips and this was probably how 'the kids' were bitten by the driving bug.

 Reg continued to drive occasionally interstate while operating his fleet of Albion and AEC trucks after he became part of the Mercury Transport Group.  He was then in his 50s.  As the children grew up Bill was the first son to follow dad into the business driving Albions. 

Then Ron came of age and he too started driving for dad.  The call of the road even extended to Reg's sons-in-law and they and their sons have continued in to the 21st Century.  Reg Phillips started a transport dynasty that is still thriving 80 years later.
