Alex Pollock
Alex Pollock was born in Auckland NZ in 1946 and raised on a farm where he learned to drive tractors and dozers at a young age. When turned 19 Alex started his professional career driving a Bedford pulling a float and tipper around Auckland for two years. In 1966, on his 21st birthday, Alex moved to Australia and settled in Newcastle NSW where commenced driving a AB International for Jack Small.
Alex's nickname was 'black fella' as he was always covered in grease and oil from working on or under trucks.
Alex then moved to Sydney where he held various positions driving interstate for several well known individuals and companies. He spent several years with Bob Duncombe sub-contracting for Fast Freight. In the 1970's Alex moved south to Melbourne where he commenced working with Little River Haulage sub-contracting for Fleet Express.
Wanting to see more of Australia Alex relocated to Perth for a while before moving to Moama NSW where he married and starting driving for Ray Moore where he stayed for many years. In the late 1980's Alex moved to Queensland where he drove for Tonkrus Transport before joining Barry Cable driving road trains from Brisbane to Kurumba on a weekly basis for a few years.
The last 15 years of Alex's driving career was almost back where he started, near Newcastle NSW, where he worked for Joe Sepos of JS Transport Group based in Heatherbrea.
Over the years Alex has tried his hand at just about all types of freight including fridge work, livestock, tippers, car carriers, heavy haulage and general express. He has driven through every state and on all major trucking routes around the country.
Alex always had a rule while on the road and that was to always stop for another driver that was broken down. Over the years he helped many people and made many friends along the way. Alex hung up the hi vis vest in 2010 and has retired to Bowraville NSW.
