Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2005.
Ron Roberts' first driving job was for Merv Rowe at Jerilderie, starting there in January 1953. He carted shell fuel to station pumps in the back blocks around Jerilderie, Darlington Point and Narrandera areas in New South Wales.
After that, Ron then moved to Kortum Bros at Elmore for the next five years carting livestock and apples from Harcourt to the Sydney market, tomatoes to Heinz at Dandenong and butter and cheese from Murray Goulbourn at Cobram. After leaving Kortums Ronald went to Carnation Milk at Merrigum for 12 months, then on to Don Matherson at Mooroopna where he carted tomatoes to Tom Piper, Rosella and Leggo. He carried export fruit to the wharves and to the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane markets. He also carted for Bill Cousins, Oppermans, Barney Kerr and Bob Warne among others. Joan and Ron bought their first truck, an Albion Chieftain, and hauled livestock around Kyabram. They got so busy they upgraded to a C180 Inter with a 34 foot trailer and stock crate and a few years later it was traded for a 2150 ACCO and spread-bogie trailer. Ron then started on interstate carting for H.A. Chambers. In1974 he started work as a tow operator for Knights of Kilmore for about eight years driving a Mack, a Kenworth and a Scania. Ron mostly drove Melbourne to Brisbane; firstly for Frigmobile and then with his own trailer. In 1987 he moved to Cairns where he bought a business that included two school buses and three school runs. Later they bought the West Cairns Bus Service and over the next seven years the business grew to 14 buses and coaches, a big shed and yard with all kinds of work; town and school runs, and charters. Ron finally moved to Rockhampton and purchased the Stanwell contract and a school run. Once again charter work grew and the business got busier than ever with Ron in more demand. Ron Roberts is still operating in the Rockhampton area twelve years on and has been on the road for over fifty five years. He is a legend in both trucks and buses.
