Peter Scott

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2012.

Peter Scott was just 18 when he drove his first truck. It was for Hanley Bros carting general and steel. He then moved to Eastoe's Refrigerated Transport, driving local first and then interstate for the next four and a half years. He travelled with many of the old interstate drivers who have now passed on. Most of them took him under their wings and taught him the ropes. Peter travelled mainly Melbourne to Sydney using the old Hume Highway (the Man's Track), occasionally to Brisbane and quite frequently Sydney to Adelaide.

Peter then went to Wettenhall Cartage Co where he travelled Melbourne to Sydney and Newcastle and did a short stint where he lost his licence and worked (still in the industry) on the dock for Ansett and Kwikasair. When he was eligible to drive again Peter took up a driving job with Kwikasair on the Melbourne to Yass changeover.

In I971 Peter married Lois and gave away the highway and commenced driving tankers for Caltex Oil Co. where he won the Safest Driver of the Year award. He remained there for a couple of years before deciding he wanted to go back on the road. He worked for Barry Williams Transport driving Melbourne - Canberra - Bombala - Melbourne carting Courage Brewery products up and bringing timber from Bombala home.

Peter then moved on to John Rae Express Haulage driving Melbourne - Brisbane return two trips per week. He also travelled to Townsville and Cairns carrying rocket freight before going to Perth carrying Tetley Tea in 1974 when the railway track washed out. Next Peter went to PF & MI Tobin Transport. He recalls the thrill being given the new Macks and SARs while driving for Pat Tobin. It was indicative of the professionalism that Peter showed with his driving skills. That work consisted of two Melbourne - Brisbane trips every week.

Peter then decided to go into business for himself and bought an International R190 and did a few West Wyalong changeovers before buying his first tipper, a Diamond T L966 that he worked through the Plant Hires. After a year he sold the Diamond and purchased his first Mack R600. Following that he bought and sold quite few Mack trucks, but finally switched to Kenworth. In 2012 Peter operates six Kenworths, five as trucks and dogs and one a 950 semi tipper. Since 1976 Peter has subcontracted three trucks to Burdett Sand and Soil and two to Holcim (formerly Readymix). He drives the semi himself carting grain interstate. Lois takes care of the day to day running of the business.

Peter enjoys nothing more than catching up with his old driving mates from the past. He attends truck reunions in Melbourne and Alice Springs and elsewhere if he can.
