Roy Shaw

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2013.

Roy Shaw (Shawie) was born in Winton, Queensland, in 1929.  Roy and wife Beryl Shaw's contribution to the trucking industry has spanned over 60 years giving them legend status in Outback Queensland. In 1950 Roy and Beryl purchased the private mail run from Winton to Karoola from his father for 500 pounds and named it RN & BJ Shaw.  They also carted wool and general goods to and from properties around the Diamantina Shire. Their first truck was an International KS5.

The business was renamed Shaws Transport Pty Ltd in 1956 when the couple introduced stock carting. Now Shaws Transport carted wool and stock across the Winton and Diamantina area to the Winton railhead with a fleet of two Internationals, an R200 and an R160.

A DCO405 International and three triple deck sheep crates were purchased in 1961.  With this expansion the business carted cattle and sheep across the Diamantina, Warrego, Kennedy and Channel country.  In 1974 Shaws Transport purchased four Leyland roadtrains from Marion Downs and the business grew to ten men and eight trucks.  As a result of the acquisition of the Marion Downs trucks there was an increase in work.  In the late 1970s Shaws Transport engaged the services of five sub-contractors to meet the growing demands from the cattle and sheep industries.

Shaws Transport was sold to McIver Bros Transport in 1980.  Roy retained front end loaders and tip trucks and was contracted by the Winton Shire Council until 2010.  Since Roy's retirement at the age of 80 years, he has made a significant contribution to the establishment of the Winton Diamantina Truck & Machinery Museum in Winton and is a foundation member. After many years in the industry, Roy recalls a memorable moment when he arrived at Amelia Downs and found that he had 23 bales of wool and a prized racehorse to be transported to Winton on the back of the R160.  The bales of wool were loaded around the racehorse and the load arrived safe and sound.

Roy Shaw is a recognised icon in the trucking industry across the central and south west regions of Queensland and is always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others
