Royston Whybird

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2012.

Royston Whybird completed his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic before continuing the family tradition, as the fourth generation, of being involved in the family furniture removalist business of Whybird Removals. Royston joined the business as a mechanic and later drove interstate with furniture removals. His great grandfather had commenced the business, with a horse and cart. in the Ipswich, Qld area in 1857.
One of the early highlights for Royston was driving a removalist truck from Ipswich to Perth and return in 1965. Considering the road conditions at this time, the successful completion of this trip remains a strong memory for him.While Whybird Removals was based in Ipswich the trucks worked all over Australia wherever clients needed to be relocated. Royston experienced one of the big changes within the furniture removal industry when intermodal shipping containers were introduced for haulage of intra and interstate freight in both road and rail transport operations.Royston sat on the QRTA (Queensland Road Transport Association) State Executive for ten years from 1986 to 1996 and for many years belonged to the Australian Furniture Removers Association.In 1986 Royston and Shirley Whybird purchased full shares in the business and operated it until 1997 when they sold Whybird Removals ending a 140 years family tradition in furniture removals.After selling the business Royston became involved in training within the industry. He also audits accreditation programs for trucking companies including the Trucksafe initiative and the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme.
