Greg Whitford

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2010.

Young Greg Whitford started his working career knocking rust from ships' hulls that came into port and on the local prawn boats in Ceduna where he grew up.

In 1974 at the age of 16, Greg started working with Shell's bitumen spray gang, laying bitumen across the Nullarbor and in South Australia and Victoria, driving a variety of ten yard tippers, loaders and trucks. After moving to Bendigo Greg started working for Moama Transport, tarping and untarping  loads.

After getting married he took on several jobs driving smaller trucks including sales and delivering for Peters (Australian United Foods) and Elmore chemicals.

In 1989 Greg started driving for Maddens Transport in Harcourt driving interstate carting glass and then went bulldozing for Reads Earthmoving before taking an interstate run with Leechs Transport of Castlemaine. By the mid 1990s he'd started with Kortums Transport Elmore running Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth carrying goods for Target and Woolworths after which he carted soil and landscaping products for Advance Landscaping and Leisure. It was while Greg was working at Hymix Bluestone Quarry (Axedale) that he met his future partner Annette and found they had a common dream of travelling around Australia. In 2004 they set off on their grey nomad adventure. They have been travelling the country since taking on work wherever they choose to stop. Greg is in much demand as a roadtrain driver.

During his travels Greg has done roadtrain work all over Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Terriotry. He is currently driving for Arkwood in Gatton, Qld.

Greg and Annette love their gypsy lifestyle and are regular visitors to the National Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs where they are Honorary Life Members for their contribution to saving our trucking heritage.
