Daryl Pickering
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2023.
Daryl Pickering was born in Swan Hill in 1969, to William (Ted) and Dorothy Pickering. In 1991, he married Pauline and together they have 3 children.
After graduating high school, Daryl, moved to Bendigo to undertake a Bachelor of Business, Accounting. He spent his summer breaks back in Swan Hill collecting and loading the fruit produce for the family business, Pickering Transport Group; which was founded in 1954, by Ted and George Pickering.
In 1990, Daryl received his Bachelor’s degree and shortly after, began teaching at Holmesglen Tafe in Chadstone. In 1994, after 3 years of teaching Daryl and his family moved to Swan Hill to begin full time work at Pickering Transport Group.
Daryl’s role has always been around finance. He started by managing the superannuation and taxes, whilst working closely with Ted to learn all aspects of the financial side of the business. Daryl eventually took over as the sole finance manager when Ted entered retirement.
For numerous years, Daryl was the chairman of AUFTAC (Australian United Fresh Transport Advisory Committee) and he was on the board of the Transport Super Fund (TIS). Daryl is still an avid member of the Family Business Association which he takes new learnings from. While using these new learnings to push Pickering Transport into the future he always keeps the family business values at the core of his decisions. Daryl enjoys the opportunity Pickering Transport provides to meet new people, to work with family and to witness the loyalty of employees and customers who have been with the company for decades.
Daryl works tirelessly to navigate the constant financial pressure of running a low profit margin business. He saw the company through the hardships of the Global Financial Crisis and Covid19 whilst easing the anxiety of those around by providing stability and level headedness. Daryl is constantly striving to ensure that Pickering Transport is keeping up with all areas of compliance to provide a safe working environment for all. He is always available to assist staff with any questions, queries or hardships they may be facing, doing his utmost to ease the burden.
In 2018, Daryl became the CEO of Pickering Transport whilst continuing his role as the Chief Financial Officer, where you will find him today. Under the guidance of Daryl, Roger and Jamie Pickering, Pickering Transport now employ around 350 employees, have 105 prime movers and 50 rigids in their fleet. Together as a team, they are driving Pickering Transport into the future.
