Jamie Pickering

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2023.

James Pickering (Jamie) was born in 1967 in Melbourne, Victoria, the third child and only son of George and Betty Pickering (both dec.) At the time George was part owner of Lake Boga Transport which he had established in 1954 with his brother Ted. Jamie was bound to have a love of trucks and all things transport.

Jamie spent his first 4 years in Swan Hill then in 1971 the family of 5 moved to Adelaide. Lake Boga Transport opened a depot on London Road, Mile End. Jamie fondly remembers being at work with George during school holidays and helping/hindering the drivers that came through the gates.

In May 1977, Betty passed and Jamie spent as much time as possible with George and the trucks in the new depot on Camira St, Regency Park. When Jamie was in his early years of high school he would catch the bus from one side of town to the other to finish the afternoon loading at the depot. Once he had his car licence he would drive to work after school.

Leaving school at 17, Jamie became an invaluable yard hand and was always ready to untarp/unload and go out with drivers to deliver or pickup loads of cement, bottles, steel and other general freight. He had and still has, a great rapport with drivers young and old.

As soon as he could get his semi and then B-Double licence it was off to be a bigger part of the transport world, taking loads to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne out of the Swan Hill and Mildura depots.

In January 2009 Jamie, his wife Dellena and their two sons moved to the Riverland to open a depot. Soon after, PTG (Pickering’s Transport Group) purchased Dyers Riverland Transport and Jamie was involved in all transport matters from Renmark. 2017 was another monumental year with the building a new depot in Renmark.

Jamie loves a challenge and will encourage his staff to step outside their comfort zone with loading unusual or over-dimensional loads. His memorable moments are moving rhinoceros from the Adelaide Airport to Monarto Zoo and moving a barge piece by piece, with his sons, from Berri to Euston then to Goolwa.

Jamie has been part of the bulk fuel transport industry, the express freight industry, tarped loads and general freight operations. He is currently the Renmark Branch Manager working with his wife and his youngest son.

Jamie, along with his cousins Roger and Daryl are now co-owners of Pickering Transport, with a fleet of over 140 prime movers and rigids and a valued team of 350 staff.
