Harold Anderson
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2021.
Harold William Anderson, known as Harry, was born in Loxton, South Australia in 1951. Harry’s father, Ernest, had a transport business and so, from an early age, Harry was fascinated with trucks. Harry completed his leaving certificate at Loxton High School before leaving at the age of 16. He quickly attained his truck licence and began working for his father.
Harry fondly recalls the first truck he drove for his father, a Commer, ‘as a little truck that went well, but rough when empty.’ His first load was grapes from the fruit blocks north of Loxton going to the wineries in the Barossa Valley. Harry would meet up with other drivers between Moorook and Kingston-on Murray where they would check their loads, trucks and tyres before sitting around a fire and sharing stories. Being a young lad at the time, Harry did not have tales to tell but he enjoyed hearing those stories and learning from other’s experiences. He recalls those times fondly.
Harry drove for numerous companies across various states including Anderson’s Transport, Australian Gas Light company, Finemore’s, Howard Springs Earthmoving, Marion Haulage, Blenner’s Refrigerated Transport and Milthorpe Transport. He also
and interstate.
Harry has driven many brands of trucks, from the early days in the Commer to a White Road Commander, Kenworth, Ford Louisville and “John Stuart'', one of 50 special Superliner Mack trucks produced for the Bi-Centennial celebrations. He drove this unique Mack hauling oversized, heavy mining machinery and equipment to mines throughout Australia. He also carted cars with a road train from Port Augusta to Darwin. Harry enjoyed the trips up and down the Stuart Highway.
Harry was in an accident at the Dysart Mine in the late 2000’s and was unable to work for three and a half years. At that time, he became a Lion’s Club member and was recognised for his volunteering work when he received the Melvin Jones award.
After 50 years of driving across the country, doing a job he loved, Harry retired in March 2021. Sadly, he passed away in August 2021.
