William Cutter
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in 2022.
William Henry Cutter, known as Will, was born in February 1960 in Horsham, Victoria. His love of trucks began as a young boy as his father, Sidney, drove trucks and Will often accompanied him. People who knew Will from an early age were fairly certain that Will was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps!
As a teenager, Will spent weekends loading and unloading trucks for Bill Brennan, a local transport operator. This intensified Will’s passion for the transport industry. When Will gained his truck license at the age of 19, he began driving for Bill Brennan before moving to work for Stawell Haulage. At the age of 22 Will bought his first truck, a 1418 Mercedes Benz. He towed trailers for Vaughan’s Transport of Melbourne, Victoria, carting general freight and wool to Adelaide, South Australia, until he was able to afford his own trailer.
Along with his wife, Sharon, Will operated as Wish Transport Pty Ltd. In the mid-eighties Will bought his first Kenworth, a cab-over, and from then on, Kenworth was the only truck for him! Over the years, Will has bought and sold many trucks and trailers. The first brand new truck Will purchased was a Kenworth T600, which he had built to certain specifications to suit an upcoming job. Unfortunately, the job never eventuated, and Will was left with a truck, the Kenworth’s ‘Anteater,’ which he called “PissAnt” because its rating was too low for their usual line of work.
Early in Will’s career he spent a lot of time traveling interstate from Melbourne to Adelaide, Pt Lincoln, and Roxby Downs in South Australia, to Sydney in New South Wales and to Perth in Western Australia. He has transported a wide variety of goods, including general freight, horses, hay, fuel, acid, flammable goods, wine, steel coils, grain, containers, gravel, fertiliser, and sheep pellets to livestock export ships in Portland.
Realising that he was missing out on his daughters’ growing up, Will gave up interstate driving and they sold off their flat top trailers. Buying single tippers, Will started on tipper work between Horsham, Portland and Geelong and has since moved to a B-double unit.
Will has been driving trucks for 43 years, including the four-years he drove for his local BP distributor when he took a break from being an owner-operator. Will has owned 13 trucks and many trailers over his trucking life and has employed other drivers in times of plentiful work. He does prefer to work as a single operator though.
Will’s current truck, his pride and joy, is a 2017 Kenworth Legend 900 which was built to replicate a previous (second hand) T900 he had owned. Will is well-known for the immaculate condition in which he keeps his truck!
Will is well respected in the transport industry and his passion for trucks plays a significant role in his family. Sharon, daughters, Christie and Danielle, and his grandchildren are extremely proud of Will and appreciate the hard work he has put in to provide for them.
