Graeme Dyer OAM
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at ReUnion 2012.
Graeme Keith Dyer was born in Sale, in 1938 and left school at the age of 16 to work in the family transport business, Dyer Gippsland Transport, which has been operating since 1932. The family business primarily operated Thornycrofts and Albions.
In 1955, although too young to legally drive on the road, this young man commenced driving trucks and managed to avoid the notice of the law while he honed his truck driving skills doing local deliveries. Graeme first drove a late 1940s Albion. There were regulations in those days and loads were checked for illegal goods. Tarps were able to be removed for inspection but officers often would not look further than what was easily visible because they would have to do the retarping. As 44 gallon drums were permitted to be carried these often were placed to hide the contraband stacked up the middle.
Since the late 1950s Graeme Dyer has been the managing director and executive chairman of Dyers Distribution. The business continues to grow and is jointly owned by Graeme and his three sons Scott, Greg and David. They are all keen to see the business remains a family affair into the future. In 2012 the fleet consists of over 300 vehicles including Kenworths, DAFs and over 400 trailers. While the focus of the business is on food transport some general freight is still carried. In 2011 Graeme was awarded an Order of Australia medal (OAM) for his service to the road transport industry and his community in the shire of Wellington. Graeme is active in numerous regional charities and has served as a Sale City councillor, a board member of Central Gippsland Health Services and Gippsland Water and is an active member and past president of the Sale Rotary Club. His philanthropic efforts in the Gippsland region have seen over $1m donated to charity .
Today Graeme Dyer is still working full time and plays an integral role in overseeing the largest and longest serving transport company in Gippsland, Victoria. He is well known and held in high regard amongst locals within the Gippsland community. His success in the transport industry has been through hard work, integrity and developing great relationships, not only with customers and suppliers, but within the community and of course with loyal employees who have enabled Dyers to deliver a service that is second to none.
