Lindsay Fry

LINDSAY FRY was born in January 1935 and died in September 1987 at the age of 52. Lindsay was one of 14 children and 2 of his brothers - Ralph Fry and Doug Fry, were also truck drivers. Lindsay started driving log trucks in the Strathbogie Ranges near Euroa in Victoria. It was so rough he wasn't game to take his hands off the steering wheel on the downhill runs. He later got the sack from that job for driving too fast.

Lindsay then drove a Commer car carrier and later a Ford fuel tanker for Ken Grieves and later moved to Mooroopna to drive Internationals for Hepe and Doofa Pinner. While working there he met his wife June.

Lindsay later drove a 160 International for Kings Transport in Colac. In 1960 he moved to Tatura to drive Leyland carting fridges for Ted Price. He went on to drive for Prices and Gronow's. Then came a new Magirus Deutz ; "the Deutz V8 diesel was a standout performer." Lindsay drove the Deutz interstate carting rolls of paper for East Coast Transport. He also drove the Deutz across the Nullabor to Perth before it was sealed, contending with the fine dust that was called bull dust. Lindsay rolled the Deutz to roll on its side but was fortunate to come out of it with a chipped knee cap. He took a break from driving.

In 1969 Lindsay, took a job driving a new Mercedes Benz 1418 for Pullar Orchards in Cobram. During the fruit season he would cart loads of fruit to the canneries in Shepparton and Mooroopna and to the fruit markets in Melbourne and Sydney. He also carted bulk citrus to the Tom Piper factory in Melbourne . When the fruit season ended it was back to subcontracting to East Coast Transport on the interstate runs. He drove for JD Morey in a 1418 Benz and later drove he drove an ERF for East Coast Transport and an International DCO's and Transtars, for Knights, Kilmore. He also did a stint carting bitumen and motor spirits. His last job was subcontracting for Knights in a variety of trucks including G89 Volvo an Atkinson and an N12 Volvo.

After the death of his oldest daughter at 18 years of age, Lindsay Fry took employment working on a local orchard until his untimely death at the age of 52. A true gentleman of the Highway.
