Murray Fox

Murray Fox was born in 1953 on the far west coast of South Australia.

The son of a shearer/grazier, he was raised on a property called “Krinkabie” via Nundroo, South Australia, and educated at the Coorabie rural school. Leaving school at 14 years of age, Murray worked in shearing sheds, served fuel at a Nundroo roadhouse and drove tractors on farms until he got his driver’s license.

In 1972, Murray started working for Jack Mullans, who had him driving a 7 series Dodge from Ceduna to Adelaide, carting wool, livestock and general freight. He then carted produce to Paddy’s Market in Sydney, New South Wales in various trucks, from an ACCO to a B615 B model Mack. In 1974, Murray began work with McCormack Freightlines, carting between Adelaide, Alice Springs and Darwin in the Northern Territory.  Murray was in Darwin when Cyclone Tracy hit and his G88 Volvo sustained a broken windscreen from a caravan wrapped around the front of the truck! Murray found a screen door from a house, fitted it to the front of the truck as a temporary windshield and drove back to Adelaide.

Murray drove Mack and Kenworth prime movers on rig shifts in the Cooper Basin and when working for Topps Trucking, he carted culverts from Adelaide to Tarcoola for the railway line to Alice Springs. He then drove an Autocar and then a Mack truck, doing heavy haulage across the country for Campbell Low Loaders. 

In 2004, Murray bought a Kenworth K104 and subbied to Rex Andrews doing wind farm work. He purchased a 904 Kenworth in 2013 and went back to rig shifts for Neil Mansell in the Cooper Basin and Simpson Desert.  

At one time, Murray helped strip down a Caribou aircraft and then transported it from Oakey Army Base in Queensland via Charleville, Eromanga, Innamincka, down the Strzelecki Track and down to the South Australian Aviation Museum in Pt Adelaide.

Murray is still doing odd jobs in his road train in the north of South Australia and the Northern Territory. He enjoys spending time with his family and grandchildren but the bush is always calling him.
