Alan Kelly

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2008.

Alan Chadwick Kelly was born in Campertown, VIC in 1927.  His father, Alfred Kelly, operated a transport company carrying general goods between Campertown and Melbourne.
As a small boy Alan wanted to be involved in trucking.  His first driving job was with Les Tyres who ran buses between Rainbow and Swan Hill for Ansett.  This was how he met Silvaris & Harvey who carried fruit and vegetables supplying fruit shops all along the highway between Melbourne and Mildura.
For four years, both Alan and his younger brother, Ian drove for them.  They left to drive petrol tankers.  Alan went to work in the hotel industry with his parents and Ian went driving between Canberra and Sydney.  During this time George Silvaris died and Ted Harvey could not cope on his own so Alan and Ian joined him in a partnership.  They eventually bought Ted out and traded as AC & I Kelly.  Alan had at last achieved his dream of owning a transport company.  During this time Alan married Dawn and had two sons, Ian and Barry.  Alan and Ian operated a wholesale fruit and vegetable business and carried general freight, fruit and vegetables between Melbourne and Mildura and between Adelaide and Sydney.
In 1969 they bought a stall in the new market in Footscray Road.  This is still operating today with Ian's son Geoffrey in charge.  Alan carried on the transport side operating a number of trucks and organising subcontractors.  He bought one of the first R 200 Internationals as well as B-model and R-model Macks.  Sadly Alan passed away from a heart attack at 49 leaving his son Ian to carry on the business.  Ian later sold to Ted Pickering from Swan Hill, VIC.  Both Ian and Barry are still actively involoved in the transport industry carrying on the family trucking tradition.
