Barry Land
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2013.
Barry Land was born on 14 February 1955 in Cunnamulla Hospital, Cunnamulla, Queensland; the only boy in a family of seven children. Barry attended Cunnamulla State School until the age of fifteen.
From a very young age Barry was fascinated by the transport industry. At the age of seventeen, after working as a baker, Barry left his hometown and moved to Toowoomba. It was with this move Barry began working for a number of transport companies.
While driving for one of these companies on a trip to Sydney, Barry met and fell in love with his future wife Raewyn. They set up their family home in Toowoomba where they have raised their three sons.
In 1984, with the full support of Raewyn, Barry decided to 'have a go on his own' and they purchased their first truck, making him an owner/driver. By the time Barry had taken delivery of his sixth truck, he had to make a big decision; to come off the road and run his growing business from a depot. That first depot is often referred to as the 'garden shed', due to its size.
Barry Land has come a long way from those early days of being a one truck operation and being away from his family for weeks at a time. He is now a proud fleet owner of over 60 trucks which can be seen on the highway on any day of the week.
Land Transport operates and services its customers with ten depots of its own and a number of agents Australia wide. The company is known for its reliable and efficient service. The fleet is maintained in its own fully equipped workshop which is based in Toowoomba opposite Land Transport's head office.
Today, the next generation of Lands, Robert, Nathan and Ben work within the business in various depots around the country. Barry is still driving, but not a truck; he can be seen on any day in the office in the Brisbane depot, playing a major role in the control, operations and management of Land Transport.
