Terence Patrick Lamprell (Terry), was born in March 1950 in Inglewood, Victoria. He developed an interest in the transport industry from his uncle, Anthony Stevens, an owner operator who taught him the finer details of trucking. At 19, Terry was driving one of the most powerful trucks in the area, a DCO International semi-truck for Fitzpatrick’s Transport, Charlton, Victoria. It was around this time that he met his wife-to-be, Lorraine. Circumstances at the time meant he had several jobs including driving a Kenworth K model on interstate runs for Graham Johns and working for Cliff Wheelhouse and the local Waterwheel Flour Mill.
Terry and Lorraine welcomed the arrival of twin daughters and also established a hay contracting business. Terry purchased his first truck then, a AA International, single-axle semi. The challenges of being a mother and running a small business meant Lorraine would lay a blanket and toys on the floor of the truck cab for the twins to play on so she could drive the truck around the paddock as the hay was loaded.
Terry next purchased an Albion Tray and a UD CK 30, with a lazy axle, for carting cement for Blue Circle Southern, from Port Adelaide to Melbourne. He later upgraded this truck to a UD CW41.
The family has wonderful memories of going to Adelaide for holidays, after uploading the bob-tail. It must have been a funny sight to have the truck arrive at tourist spots with the family aboard. The whole family loved it.
Unfortunately, Terry had to sell his business after the 1990 recession. Thereafter, he drove for Ian Weymiss, and then again for Water Wheel Flour Mills; he developed great friendships with people at Arnotts and the local bakeries.
Terry drove for over 46 years carting tomatoes, general freight, and beer from Carlton and United Breweries in Melbourne to everything in between. He had many wonderful adventures over his career and had an excellent reputation, particularly for his ability to back a truck into the tightest of spaces. In 2015 at the age of 65, Terry retired with a perfect driving record, never having had an accident, nor losing a load.
Terry fondly regards his years of driving, along with his family, as giving him the best years of his life.
