Graeme Lunn

Graeme Lunn started work as an apprentice butcher in 1959. He finished his apprenticeship and in 1965 he changed course to go truck driving and began a lifetime relationship with trucks and road transport.
He drove an AB 184 International for Frank O'Connell in Bendigo, carting stock all over Victoria, N.S.W. and South Australia. Following this, in 1970, Graeme drove a 7-series Dodge for Dohertys running Melbourne to Sydney and Adelaide carting general freight. In 1973 he drove a Kenworth K125 hauling coils of steel and general freight for Kevin Monti travelling to Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. He was one of the first trucks to arrive in Darwin with food supplies after Cyclone Tracy struck in 1974.
Graeme bought his first truck in 1979, a 1972 Kenworth K125. He began hauling refrigerator vans for Freezer Freight Services from Melbourne to Perth and Darwin. During this period, he experienced driving in the wet season when roads were not as they are today. There were many difficulties but lots of camaraderie and good times as well. In 1995 he bought another K125 1984 model and carted grain in the off season, lucerne cubes to Darwin wharf to feed boat cattle. This truck was No. 15 ex Fred's Transport in Shepparton and Graeme still drives it today. In 2002 he bought a W-model Kenworth which his son Dan drives hauling grain around Victoria, N.S.W. and Queensland.Graeme's best memories are of his often funny outback experiences and the friendships he has made in the industry. He was always well-known for his habit, on the long hauls, of stopping to light a fire and in next to no time, cooking a slap-up meal. To this day he never leaves home without his trusty tucker box always well stocked!
