Ross McMahon

Ross McMahon started with Scott's transport as a driver at the Adelaide Tanker Depot in 1964 transporting furnace oil from the Port Stavac Refinery to power stations at Osborne and Torrens Island.

In May 1974 Ross was transferred to Darwin as a driver with Ascot Cartage Contractors, later that year he was promoted to manager. At that stage they only had four roadtrains operating from Darwin, this grew to over 20 tanker combinations with contracts with Mobil and BP carting to Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Gun Powder and Mt Isa. After Cyclone Tracy they started a milk run for Malanda Milk from Townville to Darwin delivering to most towns along the way in the Northern Territory.

In July 1978 a meeting was held at the Maranga Hotel in which the Northern Territory Road Transport was formed. Ross was elected as Interstate Representative on the committee that was formed that night. The organisation has made vast improvements to road transport in the Northern Territory.

In 1982 Ross was transferred to Mount Gambier to look after fleet maintenance. He then went back to Adelaide in a caretaker role as manager for one year, then to Perth with K&S freighter as Operations Manager for two years. Ross then went back to Darwin for 12 months as manager. 1n 1988 he was transferred to Alice Springs as manager of the Ascot and NTFS depots. Mr Scott asked Ross to go for two years which turned into 13. In 1999 Ross was awarded Life Membership of the NTRTA along with his good friend Dean McBride.

Ross retired in 2000 to the Gold Coast for many years but has now moved back to Mount Gambier. Good times and good people have been the highlights of Ross's time in the transport industry.
