Terry Moss

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2014.

Terry 'Knuckles' Moss was born in Korumburra Vic in 1941. After schooling he got an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic. While much of his apprenticeship was done on tractors his job some times involved delivering or picking up tractors on a tray truck. It was the part of his work he liked best and the call of the road soon had him longing for a truck of his own. Terry bought his first truck in his 20s. He started off with a tray truck for local deliveries.

However, larger trucks and longer distances beckoned and the time came when he purchased an 86 Volvo truck and started on the Melbourne to Sydney and Adelaide runs. His love for Volvo trucks saw him step up a size with each new truck until he found that even the largest model was not big enough for the work load.

For sixteen years he followed the white line. His son also had a love for trucks and travel and since Terry would often take a load to a destination far away from the main highways, such places as the Moomba gas pipe line at Tibooburra where the road could be impassable and non-existent after heavy rains, he would take him along to see a bit more of Australia. Once, on a trip to Perth, taken in school holidays, after unloading, Terry spent five days carting water to roadhouses on the Nullarbor during the drought.

Like many truck drivers Terry spent much of his designated time off reloading, washing, repairing and maintaining his truck. It was not unusual for him to set off to Sydney without a break. On one trip he'd managed to cover a few extra kilometres before looking at his paperwork and logbook to find out where he was going.

After finishing his interstate driving days, Terry continued to drive for other people around regional Victoria. Even in his retirement Terry has liked to cover the miles and see Australia from a different perspective. On a recent visit to Alice Springs Terry was quite surprised to see a large photograph here at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame of a Kenworth Rig of the Year that he had spent time driving. Terry is now on the Wall as well!
