Harvey Mack

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2013.
Harvey Mack was born in Melbourne  in 1943. After returning from the jungles of New Guinea where he worked as Patrol Officer and Assistant District Officer in the 1960's and 1970's, Harvey and wife Bernadette started in business as proprietors of a Golden Fleece Service Station Restaurant in Esperance, WA.
A Golden Fleece customer and owner driver Peter Young,  well known in WA trucking circles, suggested to Harvey that a good way to get started in business was to buy a truck and trailer and sub-contract for Grace Brothers carting furniture and in their new foray into general freight. Keen to work for himself Harvey purchased a new Fuso truck and Fruehauf trailer for a total cost $39000 in 1976. After just three months Grace shut down the general freight operation and Harvey was left to his own resources for the next four years sourcing loading where-ever it was available including  for Perth Freightlines, TNT, Alltrans, United Transport and several others to lesser degrees. Harvey's most consistent run in later years was Perth to Brisbane and return.
After four years the Fuso was tired and Harvey's options were to either buy a new truck or purchase the very small fledgling 18 month old Jayde Transport for whom Harvey had done some sub contract work ex Perth. This started with a $3000 overdraft. That they survived and thrived to become the business they are today is well known throughout Western Australia. Over the years Jayde Transport has grown from a one truck and trailer operation to a business with in excess of 30 trucks, 136 trailers and dollies and 56 sub-contractors. In 2013 Jayde Transport operates with over 100 staff and 50 sub-contractors, not including the extensive rail freight contracted to Pacnat and Aurizon.
Early trucks operated by Harvey and Bernadette included the infamous Marrs Transport Flintstone after Harry Goldstraw retired, and several Kenworths, Scanias and Atkinsons. The rule for prime movers these days is Caterpillar power, including Freightliner and Kenworth. For lighter units Isuzu is favoured.
Harvey and Bernadette have done the hard yards as most in the road transport have had to do in the mid to late 1900s. They have no regrets and remain enthusiastic advocates for their industry.  Harvey has said many times that the single greatest contributor to success of his business has been the support of Bernadette, his lifelong business partner, and wife and the mother of their two most important assets, children Sean and Leissa. He says their greatest achievement is that they have always been able to pay the bills! Harvey has just turned 70 and still goes to work every day.
